PRESIDENT Marcos Jr., joining the Filipino-Chinese community in welcoming the Chinese New Year, reminded Filipinos that every challenge that comes their way is a new chance for growth and an opportunity to fulfill their aspirations and ambitions for themselves and the country in general.

In his Chinese New Year message, the President expressed hope the Year of the Snake would guide everyone with its wisdom and empower everyone to move through life with grace.

“As the Year of the Snake dawns, we are recalled to the virtues of wisdom, intuition, and transformation, calling us to embrace its promise of prosperity with courage and determination. As we welcome a new year of self-improvement and good fortune, let this event inspire us to boldly set our intentions and confidently pursue grand ambitions not only for ourselves but for the greater good,” Marcos said.

“May this occasion remind us that every challenge is a chance for growth, and every effort, guided by clarity and resolve, is an opportunity to fulfill our shared aspirations. Let the vibrant lanterns that illuminate our celebration also brighten our purpose as a nation,” he added.

The President also expressed hope the new year would rekindle among the Filipinos the commitment to a Bagong Pilipinas-inspiring new beginnings, forging fruitful endeavors and deepening one’s duty to strengthen the ties that bind the country.

Proclamation 727, issued in October 2024, declared January 29 as a special non-working holiday in the Philippines in celebration of the Chinese New Year.

‘NO WORK, NO PAY’

The “no work, no pay” policy will be in effect as the country celebrates Chinese New Year today, Wednesday.

According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), employees will not be entitled to any pay should they opt not to go to work today, a “special non-working day.”

“If the employee does not work, the ‘no work, no pay’ principle shall apply unless there is a favorable company policy, practice, or collective bargaining agreement (CBA) granting payment on a special non-working day,” said Labor Advisory No. 01-2025.

As for work done today, the employer shall pay the employee an additional 30 percent of the basic wage on the first eight hours of work and an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate day for overtime work.

For work done today that falls on the employee’s rest day, the employer shall pay the employee an additional 50 percent of the basic wage on the first eight hours of work and an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate for overtime work.  – With Gerard Naval
