MORE than 348,000 Filipino learners have benefited from the implementation of the “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program” of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the last two years.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., during the program’s national culminating activity at the University of Makati in Taguig City, said the program not only assists the young learners in improving their reading skills but also provides financial support to college students and parents.

“Isang programang tumutugon sa problema ng edukasyon at nagbigay kita sa mga college students at magulang. Pinag-isipan at ipinatupad nang may malasakit at pagmamahal sa kapwa lalung-lalo na sa ating Kabataan (A program that addresses the problem of education and provides income to college students and parents. It was conceptualized and implemented with care and love for others, especially our youth),” the President said.

The “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program” was launched in July 2023 in the National Capital Region and later expanded to 11 other regions.

It taps students in state universities and colleges to serve as tutors and youth development workers (YDW) to teach grade 2 learners who are struggling to read or non-readers for 20 days.

The program also assists parents and guardians through the Nanay-Tatay sessions, which are supported by YDW, to help sustain the learning of the young students.
