PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. is “inclined” to extend the term of PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla said yesterday.

Remulla said he does not see any possible grievances to result from the extension which he said could last up to six months “at most.”

“Six months lang naman ang extension at most, so I don’t see any reason. Mas importante iyon stability ng institution lalong-lalo na during elections. (The extension could be six months at most, so I don’t see any reason. What’s more important is the stability of the institution, especially during elections),” he said.

Remulla said the President mentioned he was inclined to make the extension during their meeting in Malacañang.

He said that with the election-related bans such as the appointments and transfer of personnel, the new PNP chief would not be able to implement any reassignment or deployment.

“So, might as well keep the status quo,” he added.

The President, in an interview the other day, said there is a very strong argument to keep Marbil at the helm, at least until after the midterm elections in May.

Marbil, who was appointed PNP chief in April 2024, is set to retire on February 7, 2025.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution 11059, issued in September 2024, prohibits the appointment, hiring of new employees, creation of new positions, promotions, transfer or detail of civil service employees, and suspension of elective local officials in connection with the May 12, 20225 elections.
