THE Archdiocese of Manila is encouraging all parishes and religious institutions to hold activities for the poor on November 17 to show their solidarity with those living in poverty.
In Circular No. 2024-79, Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula said they are calling on all members of the archdiocesan clergy to join the observance of the “World Day of the Poor.”
“In this year dedicated to prayer, we need to make the prayer of the poor our own and pray together with them. This is a challenge we must embrace and a pastoral activity that needs to be nurtured,” said Advincula.
“Our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care,” he added.
Advincula said the Manila archdiocese’s Commission on Social Services and Development is requesting the conduct of activities with the poor on November 17, starting with the “Prayer of the Poor” and the “Eucharistic Celebration.”
He said religious activities may be followed by having lunch with the poor; the provision of services (e.g. medical, dental, legal services, etc.); and giving of goods, like groceries.
Advincula said everyone is also encouraged to have time to listen to the stories and struggles of the poor.
“(This is) to manifest concretely our solidarity with the poor as we live out with joy the virtue of poverty,” said Advincula.
