HOURS before voting precincts opened for yesterday’s elections, operatives of the Makati police arrested an armed individual in Barangay Bel-Air, Makati City, who claimed he was an agent of the National Bureau of Investigation.
Reports reaching the Southern Police District showed that a potentially deadly confrontation between the man and patrolling operatives of the Makati police and the District Special Operations Unit took place at around 12:20 last Sunday night.
The police were conducting security patrols and surveillance as part of the overall security preparation for today’s polls.
SPD Acting Director Brig. General Joseph Arguelles said the encounter happened along Nicanor Garcia St., where the man approached the police operatives. The man was not identified.
Arguelles said the man told the police he was an NBI agent before drawing a pistol and threatening to fire.
“He declared, ‘May baril ako dito, gusto nyo patayin ko kayong dalawa dito?’” the SPD chief said, adding the man was carrying a Glock Generation 5 9mm pistol.
“The operatives immediately took cover and called for reinforcements. Makati personnel responded swiftly, leading to the peaceful surrender of the suspect who hid inside his house,” he added.
The policemen later recovered a firearm and several magazines from the man. It was not clear whether he was really an NBI agent.
“The suspect is now in custody, and a follow-up investigation is ongoing,” Arguelles added.
He said the incident shows the commitment of authorities to “safeguard our communities and act decisively against criminal threats.
