A MAGNITUDE 5.7 earthquake rocked Tarlac yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said they are not expecting damage from the quake.

“It’s quite strong, (magnitude) 5.7 but it is deep, 199 km. The source would be the Metro Manila trench … We’re not expecting any damage given its depth,” said Bacolcol.

The quake, of tectonic in origin, occurred at 5:58 a.m. Its epicenter was some 3 km northeast of Tarlac City.

An instrumental Intensity III of shaking was recorded in Bani, Pangasinan and Intensity II in Sta Ignacia and Ramos towns in Tarlac; Dagupan City in Pangasinan; Olongapo City and Masinloc and Botolan towns in Zambales; Bontoc town in Mountain Province; and Vigan town in Ilocos Sur.

Bacolcol said Phivolcs is expecting aftershocks.

“They cannot be higher than the main shock so we would expect (magnitude) 4.7 and their depth will be almost similar,” he said.
