THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) yesterday reminded local government units (LGUs) they are mandated to develop and implement solid waste management plans under the Solid Waste Management Act.
The reminder was issued amid the city of Manila’s current issues on its garbage collection.
The DENR, in a statement, said local solid waste management plans must be approved by the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC).
“The Department stands ready to provide technical assistance to LGUs in order for them to fulfill their tasks and obligations,” it said as it underscored that effective waste management is vital in safeguarding public health and protecting the environment.
The NSWMC is the body tasked with ensuring compliance with the Solid Waste Management Act. It is authorized to take appropriate actions against erring agencies or LGUs which would fail to properly implement the law.
The body may conduct investigations and recommend administrative or criminal cases for any violations.
DENR said that to date, 89 percent, or 1,416 of the 1,592 LGUs nationwide, including all 16 local government units in the National Capital Region, have solid waste management plans approved by NSWMC.
