THE number of leptospirosis cases in Metro Manila this year has almost doubled from last year, according to the Department of Health.

From January 1 to November 9, the DOH recorded 2,890 cases, or “95.14% higher compared to the same period last year with 1,481 cases of leptospirosis,” said the DOH’s Metro Manila Center for Health Development (MMCHD).

“Overall, Metro Manila has reached the epidemic threshold,” it added.

Nearly one in every four cases (24.26%) is from Quezon City, which reported 701 leptospirosis cases.

Malabon City had the highest attack rate at 4.40 per 10,000 population.

The health department said majority of the cases are males, with 2,308 (79.85%).

The 25-29 years age group, meanwhile, saw the most leptospirosis cases with 318 (11%).

The total leptospirosis cases in Metro Manila, meanwhile, resulted in 225 deaths for a case fatality rate of 7.79 percent.

In late October, torrential rains dumped by severe tropical storm “Kristine” caused massive flooding in large parts of Metro Manila.

The DOH-MMCHD reiterated its call for the public to avoid swimming or wading in flood water as it could be contaminated with animal urine.

It also said those exposed to contaminated water or soil, due to their job or recreational activities, should wear protective clothing or footwear.

For those who have waded or swam in flood water, the DOH-MMCHD said they should immediately consult a physician. It added leptospirosis can be treated with antibiotics, such as doxycycline or penicillin, early in the course of the disease.
