A Marine general has been designated as the AFP’s vice chief of staff, the second highest post in the military.

Lt. Gen. Jimmy Larida took over the post last Monday during rites presided over by AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. at Camp Aguinaldo.

Larida succeeded Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura, who assumed the post of Air Force chief last December 19.

Before his designation, Larida was the AFP deputy chief of staff – the military’s No. 3 man.

He has also served as vice commander of the Philippine Marine Corps, Joint Task Force National Capital Region commander, and AFP deputy chief of staff for operations.

The AFP has yet to announce who will succeed Larida as AFP deputy chief of staff.

During the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Elmer Suderio was also installed as the AFP deputy chief of staff for operations.

Suderio previously served as commander of the 102nd Brigade and Chief of United Command Staff of the AFP Western Mindanao Command.

Suderio was the deputy chief of staff for operations of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, which supervised military operations during the Marawi siege in 2017.

Larida is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class of 1991. Suderio is a member of the PMA Class 1993 and a graduate of the US Army War College in Pennsylvania.

AFP public affairs chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad said Brawner, during the turnover ceremony, “praised Lt. General Larida for assuming his new role and entrusted him with continuing the exemplary service established by Lt. General Cordura.”

“He also congratulated Brig. Gen Suderio on his new appointment, highlighting his responsibility to uphold the AFP’s legacy, sustain its initiatives, and lead the organization toward even greater achievements,” Trinidad said.
