JBC: Public has until Aug 26 to air concerns over Ombudsman applicants

THE Judicial and Bar Council has urged the public to submit their concerns and comments on those vying for the Ombudsman’s post left vacant after the retirement of Ombudsman Samuel Martirez last month after completing his 7-year term.

The JBC said the public may do so until 4 p.m. of August 26.

“We want to hear from you. We welcome your thoughts, concerns, or comments about the applicants for the position of Ombudsman,” the JBC said in an advisory.

Earlier, the JBC released the list of applicants for Martirez’s post, including Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.

Earlier, an online report claimed Remulla has been excluded from the JBC list due to pending complaints before the Office of the Ombudsman over the arrest and subsequent turnover of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court last March.

Remulla said he remained committed to seeking the top Ombudsman’s post.

Aside from Remulla, also included in the JBC list are Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Gaerlan, former Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares-Jacinto, Philippine Competition Commission Chair Michael Aguinaldo, Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Michael Musngi, Commission on Human Rights Commissioner Beda Epres;

Court of Appeals Associate Justice Bautista Corpin, retired SC Associate Justice Mario Lopez, retired Court of Appeals Justice Stephen Cruz, Sandiganbayan Presiding Judge Geraldine Econg, Regional Trial Court Judge Jayson Rodenas, Deputy Executive Secretary Lisa Logan, DILG Undersecretary Romeo Benitez, lawyerMelvin Matibag, retired RTC Judge Benjamin Turgano, and lawyer Jonie Caroche.
