Japan, PH hold defense drills

THE Philippines and Japan launched their second self-defense cooperation exercises which marked another major joint naval activity following the recent ratification of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) between the two countries.

AFP spokesman Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said the 2nd Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) was held Saturday at the West Philippine Sea, from the seawaters of Zambales to west-northwest of Occidental Mindoro, which are both well within the country’s exclusive economic zone.

The drills started early morning Saturday and ended at around 3 p.m. of the same day.

During the activity, two vessels of the People’s Liberation Army Navy — Luyang III (DDG-161) and Jiangkai II (FFG-579) — were spotted.

“However, no interference was encountered. Maritime domain awareness measures were in place throughout, and the exercise proceeded without incident and in accordance with international law. There were no reported incidents or close encounters. Both forces maintained a professional and secure operating environment, reinforcing their ability to coordinate effectively in dynamic maritime settings” Padilla said.

Padilla said the Philippines participated in the drill with the BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) frigate, while Japan deployed the JS Sazanami (DD-113) destroyer. Both vessels took part in coordinated maneuvers and exercises aimed at enhancing their operational capabilities.

She said the Philippine assets included BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06), an AW159 anti-submarine helicopter, a C-208 ISR aircraft from the Philippine Air Force, and search and rescue units.

Padilla said Japan deployed the JS Takanami (DDG-110) and an SH-60K Seahawk helicopter which showcased joint maritime capabilities in various operational scenarios.

She said the bilateral exercises included communications check (COMMEX), anti-submarine warfare, cross-deck, and division tactics.

Padilla said the RAA provides the legal and procedural framework for greater interoperability between the AFP and JSDF, defining a legal status of the visiting force for training, humanitarian operations, and logistical support.
