TO prevent the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the Department of Health (DOH)-Ilocos Region has launched a youth advocacy campaign that promotes safe sex.
In a statement, DOH Region I Director Paula Paz Sydiongco urged the Ilocos Region youth to join the “Take the Safe Sex Pledge!” in a bid to also avoid unplanned pregnancy.
“Having the right knowledge about safe sex protects us against HIV and unplanned pregnancy,” said Sydiongco.
“True strength lies in making the right decisions. Protect your dreams. Take the Safe Sex Pledge,” she added.
“Being young means being full of dreams and opportunities. We can only reach those dreams if we stay healthy,” said Sydiongco.
The “Take the Safe Sex Pledge!” campaign is a movement to break stigma, prevent teenage pregnancies, and empower the youth to say “Yes” to health, informed choices, and a brighter future.
The DOH-Ilocos Region officially launched the campaign last week at the Bonuan Boquig National High School in Dagupan City, Pangasinan.
During the event, hundreds of students raised their hands in a symbolic pledge to respect their bodies, make responsible choices, and safeguard their future.
The DOH-Region I said the venue was selected due to the high number of HIV cases in Pangasinan.
The Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) recorded 118 HIV cases in Pangasinan from January to April 2025.
“These figures underscore the urgency of engaging young people in HIV prevention,” said DOH-Region I.
