FORMER Manila Mayor Isko Moreno yesterday said he will mobilize the “Estero Rangers” to clean Manila’s waterways anew if he wins the city’s mayoralty race in the May 12 elections.
Moreno said that during his first term as mayor from 2019 to 2022, he formed and activated the “Estero Rangers” to clean up waterways and canals as part of his administration’s city-wide cleanup and sanitation drive.
He said bringing the team back would be one of his main initiatives if he won the mayoralty race against Mayor Honey Lacuna Pangan, a former ally who is seeking reelection.
“Naalala ninyo ba ang ‘Estero Rangers’? Sila ang itinalaga para tumutok sa paglilinis ng ilog. Ibabalik po natin sila (Do you still remember the Estero Rangers? They were deployed to clean up our waterways. We will bring them back),” Moreno told reporters.
He said cleaning up the waterways and the environment requires firm commitment and teamwork.
He added that this was part of his administration’s initiatives – to support the clean-up and rehabilitation of Manila Bay.
He also said the group’s most notable clean-up drive during his term was Baseco Beach in Tondo, Manila, where the majority of the garbage, he added, did not come from residents but were carried by tide waters from neighboring areas.
Moreno also credited the Department of Public Services under former Director Kenneth Amurao during his term for their dedication to keeping Manila clean.
