A LOW pressure area (LPA) spotted east of Cagayan has a high probability of developing into a tropical depression, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said yesterday.
The LPA was some 155 km east of Tuguegarao City, also in Cagayan, as of 3 p.m. yesterday, said PAGASA weather specialist John Manalo in a public weather forecast at 5 p.m. yesterday.
“Its development is categorized as high, meaning its intensification to a tropical depression is expected within 24 hours,” Manalo said.
If the LPA intensifies, it will be called “Bising.”
Manalo said there are two scenarios in the track of the LPA. One is that it will pass Calayan, Cagayan before heading towards Japan. Second is the LPA will move northward, without passing Calayan, and head to Japan.
PAGASA said Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos region, and Aurora province will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the LPA.
PAGASA is monitoring a tropical depression outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR). The tropical depression is not expected to enter the PAR and is not affecting any part of the country.
The tropical depression was some 2,605 km east northeast of Itbayat, Batanes as of 3 p.m. yesterday. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph. It moving northwestward at 15 kph.
