OPERATIVES of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) have arrested an alleged gunrunner involved in the distribution of loose firearms in Negros Island region.

The suspect, identified only as Elmer, was nabbed last Monday in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Tangulongan, Bais City, Negros Oriental.

Seized from his possession were four loose firearms — a caliber 45 pistol, a caliber .357 revolver, a caliber .38 revolver, and a caliber .22 revolver.

The CIDG said the suspect was “caught in the act of delivery and trading” the four unlicensed firearms to a poseur buyer.

“The arrested suspect is allegedly involved in gunrunning and illegal firearms trade operating within Negros Island Region,” the CIDG said in a statement.

CIDG director Brig. Gen. Romeo Macapaz said the seizure of the “instruments to crime” means they have effectively prevented future criminal activities.

“Rest assured that your CIDG remains relentless in its fight against loose firearms, criminal gangs and organized crime groups across the country,” Macapaz added.

The CIDG also announced the arrest of one Angelo, who is allegedly involved in the trade of counterfeit cigarettes during a law enforcement operation in Barangay Sangandaan in Quezon City last Tuesday.

Seized from Angelo’s possession were six master cases of Marlboro Red, five master cases of Fortune Menthol Green, and 40 reams of Chesterfield Red, with an estimated market value of P1.36 million.

The CIDG said Angelo had already been charged before the National Prosecution Service with violation of Republic Act of 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines) “for the unauthorized use of a registered trademark or a confusingly similar mark in commerce, which may cause deception or confusion among consumers.”
