THE local governments of Aklan province and its capital Kalibo town are offering a P500,000 reward for information that would lead to the arrest of the gunman in the April 29 killing of veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang.

Police have identified the gunman as “Boy Kim Wency Antonio,” who shot Dayang while he was watching TV inside his house in Barangay Andagao in Kalibo.

Police investigation showed the suspect went to an inn in Kalibo after the shooting.

Citing information from the Western Visayas police regional office, the PNP said the suspect has a prior criminal record. He was arrested in May 2021 for a drug offense during a buy-bust operation in Pasig City.

The PNP announced the bounty yesterday as PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil assured the public that the PNP is unrelenting in its efforts to arrest the gunman.

In a statement, the PNP said the reward was offered by Aklan and Kalibo “in support of the ongoing police operations” to resolve the killing of 89-year-old Dayang, a former Kalibo mayor.

The PNP said the reward will be given to any individual “who can provide credible information on the whereabouts of the suspect.”

Marbil thanked the local governments of Aklan and Kalibo “for their strong support in offering a reward to help expedite his (gunman’s) capture.”

“This is not just about one man — it is about our collective duty to uphold press freedom and protect those who seek and speak the truth,” he said.
