BATANES was placed under Wind Signal No. 1 as Gorio intensified into a typhoon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

PAGASA said Gorio intensified into a typhoon, from a severe tropical storm, at 2 a.m. yesterday.

The agency said the potential impacts of winds on life and property in areas under Signal No. 1 are “minimal to minor.”

In a bulletin issued at 5 p.m. yesterday, PAGASA said Gorio was some 440 km east of Itbayat, Batanes as of 4 p.m.

Gorio is packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph. It is moving west-northwestward at 25 kph.

PAGASA said Gorio is forecast to make landfall on the eastern coast of southern Taiwan this morning or afternoon.

“Gorio is forecast to intensify prior to its landfall in Taiwan,” PAGASA said.

Part of Taiwan is included in the Philippine PAR, merely for purposes of monitoring tropical cyclones, given its close proximity to the country.

PAGASA said Gorio is also forecast to exit the PAR this afternoon or tonight.
