Finland is looking to hire overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), particularly those considered as specialists and skilled workers.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said they will explore a possible labor mobility program with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment (MEAE) of Finland with the signing of a joint of declaration of intent (JDI).

In a statement, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said they are set to have exploratory talks with Finland on the hiring of OFWs.

“This collaboration reflects our collective commitment to advancing the interests of Filipino workers and strengthening our international partnerships,” he said.

He added that one of the salient points of the pact is the exploration of a potential Memorandum of Understanding on the mobility of Filipino specialists and skilled workers to Finland.

Cacdac said they also seek to promote sustainable labor mobility for Filipino professionals and skilled workers. They will push for the protection of the rights and welfare of Filipino workers.

Lastly, the DMW will be looking at combating exploitation and abuse in the context of international recruitment.

“This joint declaration is our shared vision for a future, where labor mobility is characterized by fairness, dignity, and mutual benefit,” said Cacdac. As of 2023, there are an estimated 12,770 OFWs in Finland.
