A FILIPINO tourist died in Hong Kong on Tuesday after he was hit by a taxi cab, the Department of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.
The DFA said information provided by the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong showed the 35-year-old man succumbed to injuries sustained after he was struck by a taxi outside the Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West. He was pronounced dead after being brought to the Princess Margaret Hospital.
The 80-year old driver, the DFA said, lost control of the vehicle. He is now in the custody of the local police.
“The Consulate General offers its deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and prays for his eternal rest,” the DFA said in a statement, adding the man’s remains are at the Kwai Chung Public Mortuary.
Newly-appointed DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona said the department is assisting the family of the victim, including on arrangements for the repatriation of his remains to Manila.
Family members are also set to go to Hong Kong to help arrange the repatriation.
“The consulate general is also closely coordinating with the Hong Kong Police in the ongoing investigation,” Escalona added.
Hong Kong is a popular destination for Filipino tourists with an estimated 1.2 million visiting Hong Kong last year.
