THE Bureau of Corrections thwarted an attempt by a female visitor to smuggle alleged illegal drugs yesterday into the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.

BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. said Rovelyn Fabillar, 26, a registered visitor of inmate Lester Martin Ramos, was accosted after jail guards found a condom inside a plastic sachet containing suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu concealed in her private part.

“It was discovered during a routine security inspection of visitors at the inmate visiting services unit at the Maximum Security Compound,” Catapang said.

“This incident underscores the importance of enhanced security measures at correctional facilities, particularly concerning drug smuggling attempts,” he added.

Last year, BuCor acquired two full-body scanners capable of detecting items ingested or hidden under clothing, including concealed contraband inside visitors’ bodies.

Catapang said this enhanced the security process at the national penitentiary while reducing the need for invasive strip searches and manual cavity checks, which can be uncomfortable and time-consuming for both visitors and personnel.

Fabillar was turned over to the Muntinlupa police, while the confiscated items were turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency for proper disposition.
