FDA cautions parents on use of sensory toys for kids

THE Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday advised the public to stay safe when using sensory toys such as clay, play-dough, slime, and kinetic sand.

These so-called sensory toys are popular among very young children.

The warning comes at a time when kids are enjoying their summer vacation and parents are on the toys and activities to keep the young ones occupied.

In its Advisory No. 2025-0497, the FDA reminded the parents that: “Although sensory toys are generally considered safe, it is important to be aware of their potential hazards and necessary first aid measures (when handling them).”

To ensure a safe experience, the FDA also reminded the public of proper usage and safety precautions.

Clays are oil-based, non-drying materials ideal for sculpting and molding, while play-dough is a soft, malleable substance that dries quickly, thus making it perfect for shaping and creative play.

Kinetic sand is a moldable, non-toxic material that offers a unique sensory experience.

Slime is a stretchy, gooey substance that enhances tactile exploration and sensory engagement.

The agency said sensory toys carry choking and ingestion risks in the event that a child swallows any part of the toy.

Bacterial contamination and allergic reactions are also risks brought on by sensory toys, said the FDA.

To avoid such health hazards, the FDA said the public should always check labels, particularly their age grade, cautionary statements, instructional literature, manufacturers’ details, and the FDA-issued License to Operate (LTO) number.

The FDA also said children must be under the supervision of adults when playing to prevent ingestion, choking, or misuse, while ensuring that the sensory toys are sealed in their containers to prevent drying out and contamination.
