DOLE: Young Pinoys not after ‘just any job’

FROM a generation used to accepting any work available, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) yesterday said the younger batch of Filipinos is no longer seeking “just any job.”

Speaking at the launch of the “Advancing Digital and Green Skills for Youth in ASEAN project,” Labor Undersecretary Carmela Torres yesterday said many of the youth labor force are not interested in getting “just any job” that is available.

“We are observing a dynamic shift, where young people are increasingly seeking not just any job, but meaningful work that aligns with evolving global demands,” said Torres.

“This includes a growing interest in flexible work arrangements, digitally-driven roles, and contributions to sustainable practices,” she added.

Because of this, the labor official said the government must be flexible and adaptable to the demands of the emerging labor force.

“Addressing this evolving aspiration requires us to continuously adapt our training and employment strategies to match the ambitions and capabilities of our young talent, ensuring they are well-prepared for the jobs of tomorrow, particularly in emerging green and digital sectors,” said Torres.

This was seconded by the International Labour Organization (ILO), saying young people must be equipped with the skills needed to enhance their employability.

“We must invest in young people’s skills to build a more sustainable and inclusive future across the region,” said ILO – Philippines Director Khalid Hassan.

Based on the April 2025 data, the country’s youth labor force is estimated to be at 6.415 million.

Of the total, there are around 5.677 million employed youth for a youth employment rate of 88.5 percent.
