THE Department of Health (DOH) yesterday urged all local government units (LGUs) to do their part in preventing the spread of rabies in their respective localities by allocating adequate funds.

“LGUs should ensure vaccination and registration of pets and people in their community,” said the DOH in a social media post.

In addition, the health department told the LGUs: “Do implement impoundment of stray dogs and control of pets.”

Rabies is a viral infection that can be transmitted to humans through animal bites or even scratches, most commonly by dogs and cats.

A total of 260 cases of rabies have been recorded across the country from January to September 20, 2025.

Of the total, some 95 percent of the cases involved animals that were not vaccinated or had unknown vaccination status.

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) reminded those bitten by animals that their treatments are covered under the Animal Bite Treatment (ABT) Package.

In a social media post, PhilHealth said the ABT benefit package covers the amount of P5,850 per patient.

“Rabies is a deadly disease. But it can be prevented with proper precautions and immediate action,” said PhilHealth.

“Use the PhilHealth ABT Package–peace of mind with affordable treatment,” it added.

The benefit package covers rabies vaccine, rabies immune globulin (if needed), wound care, tetanus shots, antibiotics, and other necessary supplies.

PhilHealth said the ABT Package can be availed of in over 700 accredited health facilities nationwide.
