THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) yesterday warned individuals applying as seafarers against the presence of bogus manning agencies, especially online.
“We are warning you against scammers posing online as legitimate manning agencies and asking for $600. That’s a scam,” said the DMW in a public advisory.
“The fee is supposedly meant to ensure the applicant’s inclusion in a ‘priority list’, which gives them the right to choose their ship and date of deployment,” said the DMW.
Instead of falling for scams, the DMW urged the public to report such suspicious offers.
At present, there are approximately 400,000 Filipino seafarers employed worldwide, or about 25 percent of the global seafaring population.
