The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced yesterday that Japan is aiming to hire more overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), especially in Aichi Prefecture.

In a statement, the DMW disclosed that it is now working on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Aichi Prefectural Government regarding the acceptance of human resources.

“Both sides agreed on the next steps — forming a joint technical working group, designating focal points, and holding online consultations to finalize the text while building on Japan’s importance as a destination for Filipino workers,” said the DMW.

“The initiative aligns with Japan’s planned shift from the Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) to the new ‘Ikusei Shuro’ skills development system, expected to take effect in 2027,” it added.

The discussions took place after the DMW hosted Aichi Prefecture Governor Hideaki Ohmura and his delegation during a courtesy call last August 29 in Makati City.

Records show that there are 279,464 OFWs based in Japan, including 206,011 land-based and 73,453 sea-based.

The DMW 7,930 OFWs are working in the Aichi Prefecture.
