THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is looking to transition domestic workers into caregivers due to the huge demand for such workers in Europe.
In an interview, DMW Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne Caunan said they are closely coordinating with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) so domestic workers can be trained to become qualified caregivers.
“On the part of the Department, we are working closely with TESDA on the upskilling of domestic workers to become caregivers,” said Caunan.
She said this is necessary given the growing demand for caregivers.
“There are now markets outside our usual markets like Israel, Japan, when it comes to caregivers. Now, slowly, Europe is seeing the potential of our caregivers,” she said.
“This will be a huge opportunity for domestic workers to increase their salaries, and provide them a natural promotion into the care economy, as caregivers,” said Caunan.
During the recent Overseas Labor Market Forum in Manila, the DMW noted the opening of new OFW markets in Europe, such as Slovenia, Finland, Austria, Romania, Czech Republic, and Croatia.
