THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday said it has donated the campaign materials that its personnel have removed to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and the environmental group EcoWaste Coalition.

The agency earlier said it has taken down 10,800 or 11.18 metric tons of campaign materials from all over the metropolis just two days after the May 12 elections

MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said the agency’s “Oplan Baklas” campaign to take down campaign posters and materials is still ongoing.

“Tuloy-tuloy ang pagsasagawa ng Oplan Baklas sa buong Metro Manila pagkatapos ng eleksyon. Ang Oplan Baklas ay pinangungunahan ng aming mga personnel mula sa MMDA Metro Parkways Clearing Group (our Oplan Baklas is still ongoing in the entire Metro Manila. It is spearheaded by personnel from the MMDA Metro Parkways Clearing Group),” Artes said.

He said the BJMP will use the materials for the production of tote bags and other saleable items for the benefit of inmates, while EcoWaste Coalition will use them for upcycling.

Aside from the BJMP and EcoWaste Coalition, Artes said the agency also donated used campaign materials to the Tahanang Walang Hagdan, an organization for the handicapped.

The MMDA official appealed to the candidates and their supporters to also do their part by taking down their own campaign materials and not just leave the clean-up drive to the MMDA and the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

“Nananawagan din po kami sa mga kandidato sa nagdaang eleksyon na maging huwaran sa pamamagitan ng pagiging responsable sa kani-kanilang campaign materials (We are appealing to the candidates in last week’s elections to be responsible by removing their own campaign materials),” he added.

Most of the campaign materials taken down by the MMDA came from the cities of Manila and Muntinlupa, and Districts II, IV and VI in Quezon City.
