INTERIOR Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla yesterday wants the retirement age of policemen to be extended to 60 from the current 56.

In an interview with the radio DwPM, Remulla said prolonging the service of policemen, including the PNP chief, will mean the continuity of programs in the police force.

“Personally, 60 years old,” Remulla said when asked what the ideal retirement age is, adding that under the present set-up, the PNP chief cannot do much.

Republic Act (RA) 6975 (Department of the Interior and Local Government Act of 1990) and RA 8551 (Philippine National Police Reform and Reorganization Act of 1998) set the retirement age of policemen at 56.

Remulla said PNP chiefs usually take the helm of the police at the age of 55, “so what’s happening is that the position is very ceremonial, very little change can take effect.”

Remulla said the incoming PNP chief should be “bold enough to introduce amendments and revisions to the law so we can improve the PNP.”

The extended tour of duty of the incumbent PNP chief, Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, is due to end on June 7.
