THE Department of Foreign Affairs yesterday said it has no passport records of confessed Davao Death Squad hitman Edgar Matobato, who earlier alleged that former President Rodrigo Duterte was behind the death squad.

It said it is investigating reports that Matobato left the country with a new passport and identity.

“The DFA has found no passport or biometric records under the name ‘Edgar Matobato,’” the department said. “Any application under a new or assumed identity will be flagged by the system, and a Philippine passport will not be issued if there is already an existing record and biometrics in the database.”

It warned that a fraudulent application for a passport is a serious offense punishable under the Law.

“The DFA will continue to investigate the matter, and if warranted, refer the matter to law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities for further investigation,” it added.

The Bureau of Immigration earlier said it would investigate reports that Matobato had already left the Philippines.

The New York Times recently reported that Matobato has fled the country with his common-law wife.

Malacanang previously said it has no information on Matobato’s whereabouts and if he would testify before the International Criminal Court on Duterte’s alleged connection to the death squad.

Matobato claimed he carried out multiple killings based on orders from Duterte, then the Davao City mayor.

He also testified in a Senate probe into extrajudicial killings linked to the Duterte administration’s anti-drug war.
