THE Department of Education and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines yesterday inked an agreement to provide free legal advice and assistance to teachers in the country.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the agreement also covers school-based non-teaching personnel.

“We’re happy to note that this legal assistance memorandum that we’re signing with the IBP not only will benefit our teachers but also our school-based non-teaching personnel,” Angara said.

“So these include administrative officers, accountants, clerks, and bookkeepers all over the Philippines. So that will benefit not only the 800,000 plus but the 100,000 plus non-teaching personnel,” he added.

He said the agreement is also part of the government’s effort to support the welfare of the teachers.

“It is not enough that we praise our teachers. We should do it by appreciating their contribution to our loved ones,” Angara said, noting that public school teachers will benefit from the expanded career progression and medical allowance initiative of the administration.

IBP President Antonio Pido welcomed the initiative, which he said aligns with the IBP’s commitment to community service and supporting Filipino educators.

“Now under the term of Secretary Angara, there is a big chance that our teachers will be able to get enough compensation and do away with hand-to-mouth existence,” Pido said.

Angara’s father, former Senate President Edgardo Angara, served as IBP President in 1979.
