DepEd: 34 classrooms totally damaged due to 6.9 Cebu quake

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday said 34 classrooms were totally damaged, while 26 sustained major damage following the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu and nearby areas on Tuesday night.

DepEd chief media relations officer Dennis Legaspi also said 197 classrooms sustained minor damage, while six washing facilities were also affected by the quake.

Legaspi said the classrooms are located in schools in 11 school divisions in Canlaon City, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Siquijor, Iloilo, Bohol, Carcar City, Cebu, Lapu-Lapu City, Toledo City, Borongan City.

“The earthquake was projected to affect more than 16,000 schools across 73 school divisions of DepEd in varying intensities,” he also said.

He said the DepEd has yet to receive report of any student being hurt in the affected areas. “No injuries among learners have been reported as of this time,” he said.
