The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Wednesday said at least 26 people died due to the magnitude 6.9 quake that hit Cebu on Tuesday night.

In a situation report, the NDRRMC also said 147 others were reported injured.

“A total of 26 dead, 147 injured and zero missing persons were reported,” the NDRRMC said.

Diego Mariano, officer-in-charge of the Office of Civil Defense’s Civil Defense Communications and Advocacy Division, said most of the deaths were due to collapsed structures or falling debris.

The NDRRMC said 22 structures have been reported damaged.

It also said classes in 46 cities and municipalities in Cebu have been suspended due to the quake.

Mariano said they are still conducting a thorough assessment as to the extent of the quake’s damage.

Nevertheless, Mariano said the areas affected by the quake are highly urbanized, “so we expect that many infrastructures were damaged.”

The quake occurred at 9:59 p.m. Tuesday, with the epicenter located some 21 km northeast of Bogo City, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
