POLICE investigators have filed cybercrime charges against a Chinese who was arrested last May and charged with illegal possession of a firearm in Makati City.
The PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group said its Regional Field Unit National Capital Region lodged the complaint before the Quezon City Prosecutors Office last Monday.
Charged with illegal interception and misuse of a device under Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention of 2012 was Yuhang Lui.
Yuhang was arrested in Makati City last May after police received a report that he threatened a Filipino unless the latter delivered a communication hacking device.
Seized from him was a 9 mm pistol which became the basis for the filing of a criminal case against him.
Also seized from him were several pieces of communication hacking equipment. Police pursued the cybercrime cases against him after a thorough investigation.
He posted bail for the case but remained in detention at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City for violation of immigration laws.
The CIDG said the cybercrime cases filed against Yuhang were supported by affidavits from the complainant and witnesses who “thoroughly detailed the facts and evidence.”
“These affidavits, along with accompanying documentary evidence, were submitted to the Office of the City Prosecutor in Quezon City, presenting the circumstances that warranted the filing of the charges,” the CIDG said in a statement.
CIDG director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the filing of the charges “reflects the CIDG’s dedication to addressing cybercrimes and ensuring that offenders are held accountable.”
“With the increasing prevalence of cyber threats, we remain committed to safeguarding the public through strategic and decisive actions because the PNP wants you to be safe,” said Torre.
