Comelec: Multiple voter registrants won’t be disenfranchised

THE estimated one million registered voters who have been found to have double or multiple registrations will still get to cast their votes in the May 2025 national and local polls, the Commission on Elections said yesterday.

“We won’t delete all his/her registrations if he/she is a double/multiple registrant, there will be one left,” said Comelec chairman George Garcia in a radio interview.

“We cannot just deprive an individual of his constitutional right to vote,” he added.

The poll chief said this means that the original voter registration record of the individual will be retained, while the succeeding data will be deleted.

“He/she will be able to vote using his/her first registration. We will, however, delete the subsequent registrations so that only one data will be left come the 2025 elections,” said Garcia.

Failure to cancel the subsequent registrations, he explained, will essentially open the windows for flying voters.

“One may be able to vote in all the areas, where he/she is registered. This is where having flying voters can happen,” said Garcia.

On Monday, the Comelec said that some one million registered voters were found to have double or multiple registrations though the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS),

The AFIS is a system that uses the biometrics data of voters to detect double or multiple registrations.
