A week before the last day for overseas voters to enroll in the Online Voting and Counting System (OVCS), the Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday said it is looking at the possibility of extending the period of enrollment.
In an interview, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said they are not ruling out an extension beyond the May 7 deadline.
“We started the enrollment period early so that we can accommodate more registered voters. Now, we may also consider extending the period to enroll,” he said.
The Comelec opened the enrollment period for the OVCS last March 20. A total of 77 overseas posts are using the OVCS to cast their votes.
Latest data showed 117,778 overseas voters have enrolled in the OVCS.
The overseas voting period will run from April 13 to May 12.
Despite the possibility of an extension, the poll chief urged overseas voters to enroll and cast their votes ahead of the deadline.
“We strongly encourage our kababayans to enroll early, even if they don’t want to vote yet. Don’t cram when it’s nearing the deadline and if there will be no extension,” said Garcia.
