THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday said it is confident it would reach its one million target of voter registrants during the 10-day voter registration period for the December 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

The poll body is scheduled to hold the barangay and youth polls on December 1 this year.

“It looks like we’ll be able to beat the 1 million target set by the Commission,” Elections chairman George Garcia said, noting that 888,042 applicants have applied during the first four days of the voter registration period.

Registration activities are set from August 1 to 10.

Comelec data shows that 145,181 individuals registered on Day 1; followed by 227,942 in Day 2; another 252,326 registrants on Day 3; and 262,593 more on Day 4.

The highest number of applicants is in Central Luzon with 208,398; followed by Calabarzon with 102,235.

In the National Capital Region, 64,131 individuals applied to become registered voters.

“You can see it in all our registration sites throughout the Philippines, it’s a blockbuster. It’s so overwhelming to the point that we’re closing but the line remains,” Garcia said.

What’s more surprising, he added, is that the long lines remain despite the likelihood of the BSKE being postponed to November 2026.

The poll chief earlier said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to sign on August 12 the measure that would set the new terms for barangay and youth officials, and reset the BSKE to November next year.

“Until now that we have disclosed that there is a large possibility that the elections will not go ahead, the people are still registering,” Garcia said.

“The number of people registering should have decreased. But we still see too many people applying. They don’t care whether the elections pushes through or not. They just want to get registered,” he also said.
