Cigarette joke turns deadly; man shot several times

A 22-year-old man was wounded after being shot by another man over a cigarette joke in Rodriguez, Rizal last Sunday afternoon.

Col. Felipe Maraggun, Rizal Provincial Police Office (PPO) director, identified the victim as alias Jeremiah, a resident of Sitio Bukid Laog, Kasiglahan Village, Barangay San Jose, Rodriguez, Rizal.

He is under observation at the Amang Rodriguez Medical Center after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect, identified as alias Michael, is at large.

Investigation showed that the incident occurred at Phase 1-A, Block 15, Kasiglahan Village, Barangay San Jose at around 12:30 p.m.

The suspect, while eating at an eatery, reportedly asked the victim for a free cigarette.

The victim reportedly jokingly said he does not give away freebies, irking the suspect who drew out an improvised handgun, known as sumpak.

Upon seeing the weapon, the victim fled but the gunman managed to hit him several times. Appropriate charges will be filed against the gunman, who is the subject of a manhunt operation.
