A 44-year-old Chinese fugitive who is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice on drug-related offenses was arrested right inside the main office of the Bureau of Immigration in Intramuros, Manila after he tried to extend his tourist visa.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said Lin Guangxiu was apprehended on February 11.
He said Lin is wanted for prosecution for violating Section 11, Article II of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
“This arrest demonstrates our unwavering commitment to keeping the country safe from foreign fugitives. The Philippines will not be a refuge for criminals. We will continue to ensure that our borders remain secure and that those attempting to evade justice are apprehended,” Viado added.
Viado said during the visa extension process, BI personnel detected irregularities in Lin’s records and reported the case to Tourist Visa Section Chief Raymond Remigio, who coordinated with the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit for Lin’s immediate arrest.
The BI chief said Lin’s name was linked to the seizure of over 138 pieces of tape-sealed transparent packs containing around 270,000 grams of shabu.
Viado did not provide details as to how Lin managed to remain scot-free for several years despite his name being linked to the illegal drug trade.
Lin is detained at the BI facility inside Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan.
Last year, 62 Chinese charged with various offenses in China were arrested and deported by the BI.
