The municipality of Medellin in Cebu on Wednesday declared a state of calamity due to the effects of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the province on Tuesday night.
“State of calamity has been declared in the municipality of Medellin due to the 6.9 magnitude earthquake,” it said on its Facebook page.
“Currently, our rescue teams are responding to numerous emergencies,” it said, even as it bared that the municipal hall and its annex buildings “are affected and incurred damage.”
It earlier reported fatalities and injuries in the municipality, adding that those who were wounded are being tended by the Medellin disaster risk reduction and management office.
Classes in all levels, both public and private, have been suspended in the municipality “until further notice.”
“Work is also suspended until such time that all facilities and buildings are assessed,” it also said.
The municipal government said a water tank in the poblacion collapsed and the Dagusungan and Bangon bridges are not passable.
