MAKATI Mayor Nancy Binay yesterday appealed for unity and put politics on the back burner amid the bitter mayoralty race in the city that saw her running and winning the top local post against her brother-in-law, Luis Campos.

Binay issued the appeal when she attended her first Monday flag-raising ceremony at the City Hall grounds in Poblacion, Makati.

“We may have different backgrounds, we may have different histories, but what unites us is bigger than what divides us. We all love our city and we want Makati to prosper,’ Binay said.

“Let’s all work together. Magtulungan po tayo. We are stronger when we stand together. Araw-araw, pipiliin natin ang pagkakaisa kaysa pagkakawatak watak, ang pag unlad kaysa sa pulitika (Let’s all work together. Let us help one another. We are stronger when we stand together. Every day, we should choose unity over division, progress over politics),” she added.

Speaking to the assembled local officials, department heads and city hall employees, Binay also appealed for them to always prioritize service to their constituents.

She reminded them of what her father, former Makati mayor and vice president Jejomar Binay, has repeatedly intoned in all his years in the city that whatever differences they have, at the end of the day, they all should love Makati.

“We encouraged our elected officials, department heads, and all city hall employees to unite to serve our city. Let us help one another for a more beautiful, more progressive, and the best that is Makati,” she said.

Binay also pledged that her administration will continue to provide top-notch basic services to Makati residents.

“Buong puso ko pong isusulong ang serbisyong de kalidad, serbisyong Makati, serbisyong Binay,” she said, adding this was her commitment to the flag raised in yesterday’s ceremony.

The Binays have been at the helm of Makati since 1986 when the family patriarch was appointed by then President Corazon Aquino as officer-in-charge, except for a brief period from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 when City Hall was under Romulo “Kid” Pena as acting mayor after the Department of the Interior and Local Government served the suspension order against then mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay over the allegedly overpriced Makati City Hall Building 2.

In the May 2025 elections, Nancy beat Campos, garnering 114,898 votes over the latter’s 85,664.

She won in 19 of Makati’s 23 barangays.

Campos is the husband of Abigail Binay, who ran but lost the Senate race in the same elections.
