Batch of ‘adulterated’ herbal tea product voluntarily recalled

THE Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday announced the voluntary recall of a single batch of San Raphael Banaba Herbal Tea from the market after it was found to be “adulterated.”

Based on Advisory No. 2025-0638, the FDA disclosed that Hansen Enterprise has ordered the recall of its product with lot number 053024.

“The public is hereby informed that Hansen Enterprise has an ongoing voluntary recall of San Raphael Banaba Herbal Tea with lot number 053024,” said FDA.

“This product recall applies only to the affected lot number 053024 of San Raphael Banaba Herbal Tea,” it added.

The agency said the product recall was made after the said batch of the product was found to have exceeded the maximum allowable level for cadmium.

It noted that cadmium is a heavy metal, and that prolonged consumption can cause cancer and organ system toxicity, such as skeletal, urinary, reproductive, cardiovascular, central and peripheral nervous, and respiratory systems.

“Exceeding the maximum allowable level for cadmium deems the food product as adulterated,” said the FDA.

“Consumers are advised to consult a healthcare professional in case any of the side effects upon consumption of the said product with lot number 053024 is experienced,” it added.

The FDA said the public may report the continuous sale or distribution of the above adulterated food product through ereport@fda.gov.ph.

All local government units and law enforcement agencies, on the other hand, are requested to ensure that the said product is not sold or made available in their areas of jurisdiction.
