Army chief to troopers: Avoid complacency

ARMY chief Lt. Gen. Roy Galido told Army troopers in Basilan to avoid complacency weeks after a bloody ambush in Sumisip town left two soldiers dead and 12 others injured.

During a recent visit to the headquarters of the 101st Brigade in Isabela City, Galido noted that soldiers are performing perilous jobs and should be aware of the risks.

“Our work is extremely hazardous and high risk – that’s why our compensation is significant. But that should never lead to complacency,” Galido said during his “Talk to the Troops.”

“In this line of duty, a single mistake, one wrong assessment, could mean everything. The question is: is your family ready for that?” Galido told the soldiers.

Last January 22, combined forces of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and lawless groups waylaid troops from the Army’s 32nd Infantry Battalion in Barangay Lower Cabengbeng who were on their way to secure members of the United Nations Development Program out to visit the barangay.

The attack resulted in the death of two soldiers, the wounding of 12 other soldiers and the burning of their truck. Two of the attackers died in the fight.

“I always emphasize discipline because it is through this discipline that we can find direction. At the end of the day, what’s important is that we return home and see our families smile,” said Galido.

Galido commended the 101st Brigade, headed by Brig. Gen. for its crucial role in sustaining peace and progress in Basilan, according to Army spokesman Col. Louie Dema-ala.

Dema-ala said the Army chief “conveyed his appreciation for the troops’ discipline, dedication and sacrifice in ensuring the security of the people of Basilan.

“The Army chief also talked about sustaining the troops’ high morale and welfare, highlighting the focus on non-commissioned officers’ leadership and empowerment, issuance of a new set of uniforms as well as updates on the additional subsistence allowance,” said Dema-ala.

Galido also visited soldiers at military and private hospitals in Zamboanga City and Basilan where they are recuperating.

Dema-ala said Galido made sure that the injured soldiers were “provided with appropriate support and medical attention.”

“Lt. Gen. Galido encouraged the recovering troops and lauded their heroism and bravery,” added Dema-ala.
