A TOTAL of 2,765 policemen were penalized by the PNP for various administrative offenses last year and 903 of them were dismissed from the service, PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said yesterday.

“These figures demonstrate the unstinting commitment of the PNP leadership to cleanse its ranks of bad eggs while strictly adhering to due process,” Marbil said.

Marbil said the cleansing efforts “reflect the PNP’s resolve to ensure accountability and maintain the trust of the Filipino people.”

The PNP said 2,691 other policemen were also administratively charged last year but were exonerated.

Of the penalized policemen, 1,112 were suspended, including 101 officers (one colonel, 19 lieutenant colonels, 29 majors, 30 captains, and 22 lieutenants), the PNP said.

It said 903 were dismissed, including 28 officers – five lieutenant colonels, six majors, 12 captains and five lieutenants.

The other penalties imposed on the policemen were demotion (108), forfeiture of salary (103), reprimand (423), restriction (82), and withholding of privileges (34).

The PNP has enhanced its internal cleansing efforts, including implementing the Zero Backlog Program which seeks to resolve administrative cases within 110 days.

“The PNP remains steadfast in its commitment to internal cleansing and organizational excellence,” said Marbil.

“These efforts not only strengthen our institution but also reaffirm our dedication to serving and protecting the Filipino people with honor and integrity,” added Marbil.

The PNP has yet to release figures on policemen who have been penalized this year.

Two weeks ago, Marbil placed under restrictive custody 20 of the 30 policemen charged over the controversial drug bust in Manila in 2022 that yielded 990 kilos of shabu worth P6.7 billion.

The 20 policemen placed under restrictive custody are on active service. The 10 other accused, including two generals, have retired, resigned, or been dismissed from the service.

“These facts negate any impression of a conspiracy to conceal misdemeanors in the PNP,” the PNP Public Affairs Office said in a statement.
