78% of Filipinos want Sara to face impeachment trial

CLOSE to eight of 10 Filipinos or 78 percent want Vice President Sara Duterte to face the impeachment trial in the Senate and be given the chance to answer the charges against her, the April 20-24 Tugon ng Masa survey of OCTA Research showed.

The survey, which involved 1,200 adult respondents with a margin of error of ±3 percent, also showed that 13 percent are against it, while 9 percent could not say if they agree with it or not.

The majority across all geographic locations (73 percent to 87 percent) and socio-economic classes (78 percent to 81 percent) agree that the Vice President should face the impeachment court to answer the charges against and clear her name.

The highest support was from the Visayas at 87 percent, followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) at 83 percent, Mindanao at 77 percent and the rest of Luzon at 73 percent, while the highest disagreement was from Mindanao with 20 percent.

Among the regions, the highest support for Duterte to face trial was from the Cordillera Administrative Region at 100 percent and the lowest from the Zamboanga Peninsula region at 63 percent. The highest disagreement was also from the Zamboanga Peninsula region at 34 percent.

The highest agreement was also from Classes ABC at 81 percent, followed by Class E at 80 percent and Class D at 78 percent, while the highest disagreement was from Class E at 17 percent.

Among the different age groups, the highest support for Duterte to face the impeachment court was from the 25 to 34-year-old age bracket with 84 percent followed by the 65 to 74 with 82 percent, 35 to 44 with 78 percent, 18 to 24 and 45 to 54 with 77 percent each, 55 to 64 with 74 percent, and 75 and above with 65 percent. The highest disagreement was from the 75 and above age group at 29 percent.

Support for the Vice President to face trial was slightly higher among males at 80 percent than among females at 78 percent. The highest disagreement was among women at 14 percent.

It was also equally supported among those from the rural and urban areas at 80 percent each.

The highest support for Duterte to face impeachment was among those with no formal education or who received elementary education at 83 percent, followed by those with college or postgraduate education at 79 percent and those with high school education or vocational education at 76 percent each.

The highest disagreement was from those with college or postgraduate education.

The Social Weather Stations (SWS), in its survey last May, found that 68 percent of the public said the Vice President should “definitely” address the charges against her, while 20 percent said she should “probably” address it and 7 percent said she should avoid the issue.

The House of Representatives impeached Duterte last February over her alleged misuse of government funds and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., among others.
