THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday said it collected 6,100 kilograms of garbage in schools in Metro Manila that were used as polling centers on Election Day last Monday.

The amount is equivalent to 6.10 metric tons of waste materials, according to the agency.

MMDA Chairperson Romando Artes said Malabon topped the list with the most garbage collected at 1.48 tons, or 1,480 kilograms, followed by Manila-0.97 metric tons, and Paranaque-0.72 metric tons; District 1-B in Quezon City was fourth with 0.59 metric tons.

The trash MMDA personnel collected included food wrappers, papers, and even leftover food.

Artes said the clean-up operation was led by personnel of the MMDA’s Metro Parkways Clearing Group.

“It was the goal of the operation to immediately restore order and cleanliness in the affected places,” Artes said.

He reiterated his appeal to the public not to throw their trash haphazardly, adding that the MMDA also needs the cooperation of everyone to ensure a garbage-free environment, especially during big events such as the conduct of elections.

Earlier, environmental group Eco Waste Coalition called for a “garbage-free” conduct of the May 12 polls.
