THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) yesterday announced that it has arrested the third suspect in the kidnapping and killing of a mother and her son in Quezon City last year.

NBI agent Ariel Calub said the suspect was a jail officer, one of those who held up the victims while they were driving in the early morning of June 10, 2024 in Quezon City.

“If we look at the people he is with, they are mostly ex-convicts from Muntinlupa. They were recently freed convicts and he is the one providing them with shelter,” Calub said.

“This one was involved in the kidnapping and killing of the mother and her son. Based on our investigation, there are around five suspects involved in the actual abduction and killing of the victims,” he added.

Calub said that during the abduction, the suspects killed the son and abducted his mother and demanded a P5 million ransom for her release.

The victim’s family immediately sought the assistance of the NBI.

The mother’s remains were later found by the authorities in Bai, Laguna.

The first suspects in the crime, who were arrested by the NBI in July last year, later pointed to the place where the victim was buried in Laguna.

One of the suspects was a jail officer of the Bureau of Corrections while the other was a recently freed inmate from the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro.

The NBI said the suspects tried to rob the victims first, but the son who was driving the vehicle tried to reverse the car and flee the scene, but was shot and killed.

Investigation also showed that the victim’s family driver conspired with the suspects and tipped them off about the movement of the victims.

The driver was arrested last year and is now in the custody of the Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group.
