THREE members of the terrorist group Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-Maute) were killed and three others were captured after a clash with government troops in Lanao del Sur last Saturday, the military said.
“This decisive strike significantly weakens the Daulah Islamiyah–Maute Group’s operational capabilities,” said Maj. Gen. Yegor Rey Barroquillo Jr., commander of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Zampelan.
“It sends a clear message that the Armed Forces, in coordination with other security agencies, will relentlessly pursue those who seek to disrupt peace in Mindanao,” added Barroquillo.
Soldiers from the 5th Infantry Battalion and policemen were serving arrest warrants against members of the group when the fighting broke out in Barangay Lamin in Lumbayanague town.
They recovered at the encounter site two rifles, a grenade launcher, a handgun, a rocket-propelled grenade round, other rounds of ammunition, personal belongings, and “items” used to support the group’s operations.
A soldier was injured during the firefight and was promptly brought to a hospital.
Brig. Gen. Billy Dela Rosa, commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, commended the troops for their bravery and discipline during the successful law enforcement operation.
“This operation is a testament to the skill and determination of our soldiers and partner law enforcement agencies. We will not allow these terrorist elements to threaten the peace and stability of Lanao del Sur. Our commitment to protect the people remains unwavering,” said Dela Rosa.
The 103rd Brigade, in a statement, said the “decisive action has severely disrupted the capabilities of a known terrorist group in Lanao del Sur, reducing their ability to conduct violence and intimidation against local communities.”
“The operation also bolsters public confidence in the Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies, fostering greater stability in the province and creating a safer environment for livelihood, education, and local governance to thrive,” it added.
The DI-Maute is blamed for several atrocities in Mindanao, including the December 2023 bombing at the Mindanao State University in Marawi City that left four people dead and 50 others injured.
