3 dead, 10 injured as trailer truck loses brakes, crushing trailing vehicles in Marikina

THREE people died while 10 others were wounded when a trailer truck lost its brakes, rolled backward uncontrollably and crushed five vehicles trailing behind last Wednesday night in Marikina City.

Staff Sgt. Jonnie Oliva of the Marikina police said a jeepney driver and two occupants of a car died on the spot due to injuries sustained in the incident.

The driver of the trailer truck (AIA-4084), identified as Gabriel Almeda, 54, a resident of Barangay Masambong, Quezon City, was arrested and will face charges of reckless impudence resulting in multiple homicides with multiple physical injuries and multiple damages to property.

Investigation showed that all the involved vehicles were traveling eastbound on Fortune Ave., Barangay Fortune, at around 11 p.m.

After losing its brakes, the trailer truck rolled backwards until the container it was pulling overturned and crushed the vehicles behind.

Responding rescuers brought the victims to the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center for immediate medical attention. More than six hours after the accident, the third victim, the driver of the jeep hit by the overturned trailer truck, was retrieved.
