TWO senior citizens collapsed and later died during a gathering of poll watchers in Zamboanga City last Friday.
In a statement issued on Saturday night, the Zamboanga City Police said the gathering, a poll watchers’ orientation, was held at the Royce Convention Center, Grand Astoria Hotel in Barangay Zone 2.
Citing the result of the initial investigation, police said the venue was “severely overcrowded.”
The Zamboanga City police said: “Amid the dense gathering, two elderly participants reportedly experienced respiratory distress and collapsed. They were brought to the hospital but despite all efforts, both were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.”
The police launched a thorough investigation of the incident in close coordination with the Commission on Elections.
“The authorities are now working to gather all relevant information to determine the necessary steps to prevent such occurrences in the future,” it said.
