ELEVEN members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) surrendered last Wednesday to authorities in Maguindanao del Sur amid the continuing relentless military operations against the terrorist group.

The terrorists turned in 11 high-powered firearms, including sniper rifles, during their surrender at the headquarters of the Army’s 90th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Kabengi in Datu Saudi Ampatuan town.

They were welcomed by military and government officials who provided the surrenderors with cash, food assistance and livelihood assistance.

“They said relentless military operations, hardship, hunger, and appeals from their family and local officials prompted them to surrender and live a new life,” said Lt. Col. Roden Orbon, spokesman of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division of the BIFF members.

90th IB commander Lt. Col. Loqui Marco said the surrender of the members of the BIFF, specifically from the Bungos Faction, underscores the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to convince members of the group to return to the government fold and become productive members of society.

Marco said the military and the government in general remain open to the surrender of other members of the group.

“We are appealing to the remaining members of the group to follow in the footsteps of their peers and join our quest for peace and development,” said Marco.

6th ID commander Maj. Gen. Donald Gumiran commended the 90th IB for causing the surrender of the terrorists.

Gumiran urged members of the BIFF “to take the opportunity to live a new life while the government’s window is still open for their surrender.”

He said the 6th ID is “ready to help anyone who wants to start a peaceful life.”
